Christmas Tree Carbon Footprint

According to Nina Shen Rastogi at Oprah mag here are some interesting tree facts.

20 is the number of years a consumer must reuse an artificial tree before it has a lower carbon footprint than a real tree, according to one study.

28.2 million is the number of real Christmas trees sold in the United States in 2008.

600,000 is the approximate number of US homes that could be powered for an entire year with the energy used by decorative lights every holiday season. Switch from incandescent lights to longer lasting LED’s and you’ll use about 90% less energy per string. To recycle your old incandescent, go to holidayleds.com

This makes me think twice about my tree but I could never let it go. What about you? I was going to add more lights this year but now I wont. I dont need all the fancy lights outside where I cant see them anyway.

Due to all the chocolate that I’m consuming lately I found this article appropriate too. http://www.oprah.com/article/food/cookingadvice/pkgfoodfamily/20091217-o...

The Oprah Holiday Concert

Did anyone see this episode yesterday? I usually don’t watch these types of concerts but I am actually glad that I did. I personally get disappointed a lot when two Grammy winning singers perform a duet together. They both have amazing voices but together it doesn’t mix. The Oprah show did an excellent job at pairing singers for this show.

First up were Alicia Keys and Tim Mc Graw and I thought the performance was ok. The only thing I kept thinking through the song is wow Alicia Keys is a stunning woman. Alicia came around after I was a teenager so I have not seen her very often on TV. I thought she looked beautiful on this show.

This is the point of the show where I am glad that I kept the TV on. Mary J Blige and Andrea Bocelli had an excellent performance. It was so good that I am definitely adding this Christmas CD to my collection.

Here is some neat technology info. Mary J and Andrea have already made this holiday CD but yesterday was the first time that the duo performed the song together. To make the CD Mary recorded her part of the song here in the US and Andrea recorded in Italy. I think that is so neat.

Oprah saved the best for last folks. Sugarland and Jennifer Hudson performed one of the prettiest versions of Silent Night that I have ever heard. As Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland was singing all I could think was sing it girl. Being a country singer I did not expect the soulful voice that came out of her mouth. She and Jennifer Hudson complimented each other very well. I recommend downloading this song for free at Oprah’s site.

My only question of the show was. Where did Oprah get that bracelet? I’m a bracelet freak and I couldn’t take my eyes off of it, if anyone knows please comment.

OWN Coming January 2011

I was in the dumps about Oprah but now I’m totally excited. I was doing fine with Oprah's farewell until she started to cry and then I wanted to cry. I’ve been bummed since Friday but news today lifted my spirits.

An email that I received today stated this “ OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network will be a 24/7 cable network devoted to self discovery, to connecting you to your best self and to the world. This gets me so excited as I feed off of this type of thinking. If it wasn’t for Oprah and her giving shows I probably wouldn’t have reached out to charities the way I have over the past few years.

This is why I was bummed about Oprah’s departure because I want to keep my giving high going and there is no one I think that is ready to fill Oprah’s shoes in any way when it comes to giving.

Now here is the reason why I wrote this post. I love the slogan for OWN.

It’s your life. OWN it.

What more do I need to say after that.

Oprah Tells Her Success Secret

Oprah started the countdown to the end of her show this week on her site. It makes me sad but after 25 years I imagine she is ready for a change.

I found this post by Oprah on her site and I think it’s wonderful. If you are making a big decision refer to this post. I’ll be placing it on the refrigerator.

What I Know for Sure

In 1992 I decided to change the slant of The Oprah Winfrey Show from confrontational TV aimed at getting ratings to shows that took a "higher road" aimed at connection. I wanted to help people think differently about themselves and pursue ideas about spirit and balance and the possibility of a better life. It was a decision that was bigger than money or material interest. It was a paradigm shift—to use TV instead of being used by TV. To use it as a tool for good. That shift led to the creation of this magazine. And Oprah Radio. And next year, a new television network, OWN.

Using my voice as a force for good: It's what I was meant to do.

And I got here by listening to the still, small voice that I felt so strongly one evening on my grandmother's back porch when I was a girl.

All my life I have looked to God for guidance. In the early '90s, I started to recognize that I wouldn't survive if I continued to play the TV game my competitors were playing. One day while vacationing in Colorado, I went into the woods to quiet the noise of the world and contemplate my next move. I remember standing among the golden aspens and asking the voice that has been a comfort for so long: "What would you have me do?"
